Obituary of James C. Hagelin

James C. Hagelin, 89, of 68 W. Virginia Blvd., died at 1:25 a.m. Monday (January 10, 2011) at Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing. He was born November 15, 1921 in Jamestown, a son of the late Charles and Pearl Warn Hagelin, and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1939. A World War II veteran, Jim served in the Ninth Army Air Force with duty in the European Theater of operations and was discharged as a corporal in 1945. Following the military, he received his Bachelor's degree in accounting from Rider College in New Jersey. Jim was employed by the Marlin Rockwell Corp. for 35 years, retiring as senior accountant in 1985. He had also served as financial secretary for the Musician's Union #134 in Jamestown. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he belonged to the choir for many years and was active in the Senior Men's group. He played trumpet in the Municipal Band for numerous years as well and belonged to the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion. Surviving are his wife, the former Eleanor Youngberg, whom he married August 16, 1952; two sons, Robert (Janelle) Hagelin of Nitro, WV and Paul (Kimberly) Hagelin of Jamestown; six grandchildren: Robert Hagelin Jr. and Jill Gwinn of Nitro, Andrea and Nicole Balzer of Dunkirk, and Ava and Ayden Hagelin of Jamestown; and three great-grandchildren, Raechelle, Ava and Laila Gwinn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Balzer who died May 29, 2004, and a brother, Daniel Hagelin and sister, Harriett Petersen. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. John P. Saraka will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and for one hour prior to the service in the funeral home Thursday. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 556 E.
