Obituary of Marvin D. Yasher

Marvin D. Yasher, 87, of 373 Cole Ave. passed away at 2:52 p.m. Wednesday (February 16, 2011) in W.C.A. Hospital. An area resident for most of his life he was born March 23, 1923 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Tella A. and Beatrice E. Hammersmith Yasher. Marvin attended the former Celoron Elementary and Celoron High School and was a graduate of the Barker High School in Barker, NY. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Quartermaster Corp during World War II from form 1943 - 1946 in England and France. In earlier years he was employed by the former Blackstone Corporation. He was the owner and operator of the former Sampson's Liquor Store in Brooklyn Square and later moving to the Big N Plaza on Fluvanna Ave. Following the sale of the liquor store he and his wife spent winters in Naples, FL where he purchased a Ladies Clothing Store, retiring in the early 1980's. He was a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, the Herman Kent Post #777 American Legion, Celoron and the American Association of Retired Persons. He will be remembered as an avid Buffalo Bills Fan, having season's tickets for many years and never missing a game. Surviving are his companion of 20 years, Ruth Sylvester with whom he made his home, a sister Ethel (Cosmo) DeMaio of West Ellicott, a niece Susan (George) Witruke of Busti, a nephew Robert DeMaio of Lakewood, a step son in law Roland Gullberg of Jamestown and three step grandchildren Jody (John) Maring of Lawrenceville, GA, Steven (Jessica) Gullberg of Winston, GA, David (Kay) Gullberg of Springfield, TN. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Carloyn B. Fessenden Yasher whom he married June 30, 1951 and who died October 26, 1990, a brother Gilbert Yasher who was killed in action during World War II and a step daughter Shirley Gullberg. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy E. Ferguson, pastor of the Busti Church of God will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
