Obituary of Sophie Gage

Sophie Gage, 95, formerly of 96 Livingston Avenue, Jamestown, died peacefully Wednesday July 13, 2011, in Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing. An area resident all of her life, she was born August 12, 1915, the daughter of Vincent and Caroline Wiech Stawiarski. Sophie was a 1933 graduate of Jamestown High School. She worked at Jamestown Mutual Insurance from 1945-51 and Art metal Construction from 1951-62 while also working for Leo Ludwig from 1950-51. She was an avid seamstress and a volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Bank during WWII. She was a Jamestown Election Inspector from 1952-53 and was a Gray Lady at Jamestown General Hosptial for a period of time. Surviving are four grandchildren Cheryl (Steve) Lamonica of Manlius, NY, Tammy Bakewell of Lakewood, NY, Karen (John Solosy) Bakewell of Alexandria, VA and Richard (Louise) Bakewell of Jamestown; two great granddaughters Chelsea Lamonica of Arlington, VA and Ashley Lamonica of Manlius and a half sister Delores (Donald) Abrams of Sherman, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband Ransom Brainard Gage, August 25, 1993, a son H. Eugene Bakewell August 22, 1996, sister Helen Knorr, brother Leo Stawiarski and a half brother Richard Stawiarski. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. John Kuhlmann will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
