Obituary of Leanora C. Sandmeyer

Leanora "Lee" Cornelia Sandmeyer, 88, formerly of Youngstown, NY, died Friday, August 12, 2011 at the Lutheran Home & Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Karl H. Sandmeyer, whom she married January 5, 1948 and who died March 6, 1994. Lee had resided in Jamestown, NY from 1955 to 1969, in Youngstown, NY from 1969 to 2006 and returned to Jamestown in 2006. She was born July 8, 1923 in Baltimore, MD, a daughter of the late George W. and Anna Estella Andrews Alt, and received her B.A. from Cornell University in 1945. She served as Director of Christian Education at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Niagara Falls from 1944 to 1950, taught at Jamestown Community College from 1967 to 1969 and later taught in the Montessori School in Lewiston, NY. She also served as docent at the Castellani Art Museum in Niagara Falls. Lee had been a member of the First Methodist Church in Niagara Falls and Jamestown and the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, the American Association of University Women and the Cornell Alumni Association. She enjoyed Ikebana and reading. Surviving are her children, Douglas (Susan) Sandmeyer of Jamestown and Suzanne Sandmeyer of Corona del Mar, CA, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Sandmeyer of Bemus Point. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. A private family service will be held in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Alan W. Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda. Visitation will not be observed.
