Obituary of Sherwood W. Simmons

Sherwood W. Simmons, 92, of Jamestown, died Sunday September 18, 2011, in WCA Hospital. A native of Jamestown, he was born November 1, 1918, the only child of Harry and Olive Bradley Simmons. Following graduation from Jamestown High School in 1936 he attended Syracuse University where he developed his keen sense of art, fashion and aesthetic reasoning. His love of music from the Big Band era proved to reflect his superb dancing abilities to many an amazed partner. He was a WWII veteran of the US Army serving from 1941-45 in Patton's 3rd Army. Sherwood spent more than 70 years working in the world of fashion. He was a buyer in New York City, was fashion coordinator for Bigelow's Department Store and was a retail clerk for Carnahan's and Sears. Many families owed their sense of style due to Sherwood's high standard for dignity. He enjoyed time spent attending Conewango Valley Baptist Church. His strong sense of service came from his faith based view of creation. He loved his family dearly and retained life-long relationships with many friends across the country. He will be remembered as a sharp dresser, an amazing conversationalist and for his wry smile and twinkle in his eye. He helped generations of people in the greater Jamestown make clothing purchases from one generation to the next. Surviving are several distant relatives and some very devoted caregivers. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer. Rev. Marc Loranger will officiate. No visitation will be observed. Memorials may be made to Conewango Valley Baptist Church, 5443 Route 241, Conewango Valley, NY 14726. You may light a candle in remembrance of Sherwood at www.lindfuneralhome.com
