Obituary of Steven R. Evanczik

Steven R. "Cheese" Evanczik, 71, of 105 Park St., Jamestown, passed away at 5:09 p.m. Tuesday (September 20, 2011) in W.C.A. Hospital. A lifelong area resident he was born July 10, 1940 in Jamestown, NY the son of Pearl Kent Evanczik and the late Steven Evanczik.. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from December 15, 1958 to December 30, 1960. He served on the USS Enterprise and the USS Hammerberg in South America, Ireland and England. In 1968 he graduated from the Carpenters Trade School, in association with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Union Local 66, Olean, NY. As a member of Local 66 for 43 years he was also a millwright and taught millwright courses. He was a life member of the First Ward Falcon Club, Dunkirk and the Falconer Horseshoe Club. He won 2nd in his class in the 1999 World Horseshoe Pitching Competition in Ohio. He was a third generation New York Yankee fan and his favorite player was Mickey Mantle. He was also an avid Black Jack player and fan of the Cleveland Browns. In earlier years he was a bat boy for the Jamestown Moose Lodge Baseball Team during the 1950's. He was also proud of the fact that he began his working career at the age of 10 years old pedaling papers for the former Jamestown Sun. Surviving is his mother of Frewsburg, his wife the former Sheila Longhouse whom he married July 3, 1969, three daughters Shelli L. Evanczik Offhaus and her husband Kevin of East Bay, CA, Staci R. Evanczik Whittenhall and her husband Warren of Celoron, NY, Shauna L. Evanczik-Orlogg and her husband Richard of Dunkirk, NY, eight grandchildren Matthew Bane stationed at Parris Island, SC, Jasmine Evanczik, Kyle Coone both of Celoron, Leandra Coone of Jamestown, McKenna Offhaus of East Bay, Ashley Orlogg, Heather Orlogg both of Ashville, NY, baby Orlogg who is due in March 2012, one great grandchild Sylis Matthew Eli Caruso of Celoron, a brother David Michael Evanczik of Jamestown and a sister Sonya Rosdahl of Jamestown. Besides his father who died in 1992, he was preceded in death by his first wife the former Maxine Martin Evanczik who died in 1963. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt, chaplain of the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center, and Sam Ognibene will officiate. Burial will be in the Christian Missionary Cemetery, Town of Arkwright. Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Friday and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240-0631.
