Obituary of Evelyn Bingham

Evelyn Bingham, 89, of 507 Palmer St., died at 9:53 p.m. Thursday (December 22, 2011) in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 3, 1922 in Jamestown, a daughter of the late Herbert and Hulda Overberg Norman. In earlier years, she was employed as a manager at the Sylvania plant in Warren, PA. She later worked for Woolworth's in Jamestown and will be best remembered as working in the meat department of the Fluvanna Super Duper. Following her retirement from Super Duper, Evelyn worked for the former Baltimore Fish Market. She was an active member of St. Luke's Church where she taught kindergarten Sunday school classes and volunteered in the church Thrift Shop for many years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Order of the Amaranth and in former years, Swedish Dance Team. Evelyn enjoyed Big Band era music, was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and loved her cats. Most important to her was time spent with her children and grandchildren. She dedicated her life to helping others. She was a beautiful woman who was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her. Surviving is her daughter, Cynthia A. (Jim) Canfield of Jamestown; two sons, Richard E. Bingham of Pismo Beach, CA and Ronald L. (Sylvia) Nelson of Monroe, NC; nine grandchildren: Jennifer, Mary and Christine Canfield of Jamestown, Deborah Bingham and Catherine Lake, both of Texas, Cynthia Beckley and Rene VanGuilder, both of Tennessee, Lt. Col. Lee Nelson presently of Korea, and Andrew Nelson of South Carolina; ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert Norman of Maryland; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Bingham and Lynette Norman, both of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Bingham, whom she married February 15, 1947 and who died October 3, 2000; an infant son, Bruce Nelson; a grandson, Ricky Bingham; and four brothers, Kenneth, Marvin, Walter and Henry Norman. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Eric M. Williams and the Rev. Susan Anslow Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home, where an Order of the Eastern Star and an Order of the Amaranth Memorial Service will each be held beginning at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
