Obituary of Mildred A. Wells Smith

Mildred A. Wells Smith, 93, formerly of 3565 Route 394, Ashville, died at 12:55 a.m. Monday (April 2, 2012) at Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing. She was born February 15, 1919 in Ashville, NY, one of eight children of the late Cecil and Mabel Gunton Card. She together with her late husband, Myron R. 'Mike' Smith, owned and operated the S & W Western Store in Stow, NY which later became the Chautauqua Lake Gift Shop. A member of the Magnolia United Methodist Church, she also belonged to the Lady of the Lake Rebekah Lodge in Lakewood and in earlier years, the Ashville Grange. Mildred loved cooking and baking and was well known for her pies. She was always ready to open her home to all. She also enjoyed genealogy and gardening in her vegetable and flower gardens. Surviving are a daughter, Marcia J. O'Brien of Ashville and two sons, Marshall H. (Joanie) Wells of Stow and Alfred C. Wells of Panama; a daughter-in-law, Donna A. Wells of Stow; seven grandchildren: Marcus H. Wells of Sherman, Travis H. Wells of Stow, Amy E. Ray of Mayville, Nancy J. Stowell of Ashville, Richard A. Delahoy Sr. of Douglasville, GA, Douglas E. Wells of Stow and Daniel A. Wells of Jamestown; ten great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandson; three sisters, Doris (Gerald) Clark of Holiday, FL, Luella Nolan of Gerry and Janice (William) Camp of Stockton, NY and a brother, Vern (Mary) Card of Lakewood; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her first husband, Marcus H. Wells who died in 1961, Mildred was preceded in death by her second husband, Myron R. 'Mike' Smith whom she married May 12, 1962 and who died April 20, 2010; a son, Donald C. Wells who died June 30, 2010; and three brothers, Cecil Jr., Lawrence and Charles Card. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Magnolia Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, where a Stockton Star Rebekah Lodge Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
