Obituary of Mary A. Anderson

Mary A. Anderson, 99, formerly of 303 W. Fifth St. and Lakewood, NY, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing. She was the widow of Raymond G. Anderson whom she married in October of 1932 and who died in April of 1951. Mary was born March 22, 1913 in Mayburg, PA, the daughter of the late John C. and Sarah Gifford Rudy. She was a 1930 graduate of Jamestown High School and member of the National Honor Society. Mary worked for the former P & A Market in Lakewood from 1951 until her retirement in 1978. She was a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday school treasurer for many years. She was also one of the founders of the Lakewood Golden Agers and a member of the Oddfellows and the Lakewood Fire Department Auxiliaries. In earlier years, she was active with PTA's in Lakewood. An energetic volunteer in later years, she was involved with RSVP, the Lakewood Library, the Board of Elections and the Senior Nutrition Program. Mary loved family picnics and was well known for her baked bean recipe. She enjoyed playing cards, Bunko and Bingo, as well as sewing, crossword puzzles and word jumbles. She is survived by two daughters, Janice Eckberg of Jamestown and Judy (William) Hughes of Gaithersburg, MD and a son, James R. (Marianne) Anderson of Jamestown; 16 grandchildren: Anita Juul, Karen Nobbs, Kurt, Sarah, Eric, David and Karl Eckberg, Amy Tribble, Lisa Morrow, Mary Kay Behanna, Marcy Wagner, Marne Rammbeling, Peter Hughes, Thomas and William Anderson and Jennifer Brown; and 20 great-grandchildren and 6 great- great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Vaughn Rudy. The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Violet A. Davidson will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received for two hours prior to the service in the funeral home Sunday.
