Obituary of Raymond E. Cornell

Raymond E. Cornell, 97, formerly of Magnolia Road, Mayville, NY and Dunedin, FL, passed away at 1:25 a.m. Tuesday (July 3, 2012) in the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident he was born January 9, 1915 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Guy F. and Mabelle Seekins Cornell. He was a 1932 graduate of the former Lakewood High School and a 1935 graduate of Jamestown Business College. Raymond was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from February 10, 1944 to October 8, 1945 during World War II. Before his retirement in 1980, he was employed by the former Chautauqua Hardware Corporation for 33 years, serving as assistant secretary and treasurer. He attended the First Covenant Church and was a life member of the Fluvanna Fire Department. He was also a member of the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion, the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, Chautauqua Lake Antique Automobile Club, Jeepster Club, Willys Overland Knight Registry, the Florida West Coast Regional Antique Automobile Club was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in earlier years. Surviving are his wife the former Etta Gunnarson whom he married November 6, 1943, a daughter Susan C. Ayers of Frederick, MD, a grandson Andrew C. Ayers serving in foreign service, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Frances C. Allen. The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Adam Rohler, pastor of the First Covenant Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice,
