Obituary of William A. Sweeney

William A. Sweeney, Jr, 64, of 5013 Kortwright Road, Ashville, died Wednesday October 17, 2012, in his home. He was born June 22, 1948, in Jamestown, the son of William and Evelyn Stufflebeam Sweeney. He was a 1968 graduate of Southwestern Central School. Prior to his retirement in 2002, he was employed by the Chautauqua County Highway Department for 33 years retiring as road construction maintenance supervisor. He was also a self employed dairy farmer for many years. He was a member of Sugar Grove Mission Covenant Church where he had served as church chairman, deacon and youth leader. He was a Town of Harmony councilman for over 30 years, sat on the Greater Chautauqua Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and was a member of Christian Bow Hunters. He was an avid outdoorsman and deer hunter. He had many interests and hobbies including Nascar, antique cars and collecting hats, listening to country and southern gospel music, and working as an active supporter of Chautauqua County 4-H. Above all he enjoyed the time he spent with family and friends. Surviving besides his parents of Busti are his wife the former Mary Landin, whom he married August 16, 1969; three children Dr. Todd Sweeney of Kissimmee, FL, Steven (Chels) Sweeney and Bridget Strong both of Ashville; four grandchildren Onnalee and Austin Strong and Tara and Eric Sweeney all of Ashville and four sisters Judy (Gary) Fry of Sugar Grove, Becky (Jeff) Wilbur of Yukon, OK, Kathy Sweeney of Tidioute, PA and Marge (the late Scott) Roy of Busti. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sugar Grove Mission Covenant Church. Rev. Brian Haight will officiate. Burial will be in Mission Covenant Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home.
