Obituary of James R. Gustafson

James R. Gustafson, 89, of 513 Weeks St., died at 11:29 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2012 in WCA Hospital. He was born October 24, 1922 in Grassflat, PA, the youngest of six children of the late Charles H. and Elizabeth Jacobson Gustafson. Jim was a 1941 graduate of Jamestown High School and a World War II US Navy veteran. A recipient of the Bronze Star, he served from 1942 to 1946 with duty in the South Pacific aboard the LST 564. Jim received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts from Buffalo State, his first Master's degree in Educational Administration from St. Bonaventure University, and his second Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Buffalo. He initially taught industrial arts at Washington Junior High School and later retired in 1986 after many years as a guidance counselor at Jamestown High School. Jim was a lifetime member and past commander of the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion. He was also a past president of the Jamestown Teachers Association and a member of the Chautauqua County Counselors Association. An active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jim also belonged to the 100 Member Club, Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and the Thule Lodge. He enjoyed golf and participated in the VFW/Legion golf league for many years, as well as bowling in the schoolmasters bowling league. Surviving are two sons, Daniel C. Gustafson of Jamestown and Thomas J. (Ann Arcovitch) Gustafson of Burlington, VT; and three granddaughters, Claire, Jessie and Eve Gustafson, all of Burlington. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Coralyn Corey Gustafson, whom he married April 21, 1951 and who died March 17, 2005; two sisters, Gladys Clabbers and Ruth Culver; and three brothers, Harold, Paul and Russell Gustafson. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel K. Nagle, pastor of First Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home.
