Obituary of Robert E. Cates

Robert E. Cates, 92, most recently of Emeritus of Lakewood, and formerly of 157 Sanford Dr., Jamestown, NY, moved to heaven from W.C.A. Hospital on January 3, 2013 at 7:15AM. He was born on April 23, 1920 in Thorndike, ME, the son of Robert B. and Ellen (Webster) Cates. He was married for 64 years to Beulah (Black) Cates. They were married on Nov. 28, 1942 in Anacostia D.C. and she predeceased him in 2007. He graduated from Unity Maine HS and worked for Keyes Fibre Co in Waterville, ME prior to joining the USN and serving in both WW II and the Korean Conflict. After the service, he rejoined Keyes Fibre and worked there for 35 years, serving as their plant manager in both New Iberia, LA and Hammond, IN, until his retirement in 1985. He was a life member of VFW Post 8835 of Waterville, ME and of the Waterville Lodge No 33 AF & AM since 1947. He was also a member of Zion Covenant Church, Past President of AARP local chapter 334, and he and his wife delivered for Meals on Wheels in Jamestown for five years. He was always active in church activities and community projects wherever he resided. He is survived by a daughter Sandra L. (David) Rishell of Jamestown, NY and a son Robert L. (Veronica) Cates of The Villages, FL. He is also survived by grandchildren Judith (Scott) LeRoy and Jennifer M. Rishell of Columbus, OH, John D. (Jill) Rishell of Pittsburgh, PA and great-grandchildren Spenser and Sarah LeRoy and Lillian and Emily Rishell. He was predeceased by two brothers Claude (Jack) Cates and Cecil M Cates and twin great-grandsons Nathan and Luke Rishell. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Rick Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 1-3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
