Obituary of Carolyn E. Demarest

Carolyn Fadale Demarest, 103 Registered Nurse & WW II Navy Veteran Dec. 23, 1909 ~ Feb. 6, 2013 Carolyn E. Fadale Demarest, born December 23, 1909 in Jamestown, NY, was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Josephine Andolina Fadale. Following graduation from Jamestown High School in 1929, she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1933 from Crouse-Irving Hospital School of Nursing in Syracuse, NY. In 1942, Mrs. Demarest enlisted in the Navy Nurse Corps and was commissioned an Ensign. She reported to the Brooklyn (NY) Naval Hospital where she met her future husband, David Richard Demarest. They were married on January 30, 1943 in Ridgewood, NJ. Following the November 20, 1950 death of her husband, Mrs. Demarest returned with her children to Jamestown where she continued nursing at WCA Hospital. In later years, Mrs. Demarest served as plant nurse for the former Automatic Voting Machine Company and ultimately retired from a position with the former Fenton Park Nursing Home in Jamestown. Mrs. Demarest was a life-long active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she volunteered at the Thrift Shop and belonged to the Bishop Overs Guild. She was also a member of the National Audubon Society, Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, Marvin Community House, Business and Professional Women, Chautauqua County Graduate Nurses Assoc., 100 Member Club of JHS and the Crouse-Irving Alumni Assoc. She is survived by a daughter, Hon. Carolyn E. Demarest, Justice of the NYS Supreme Court and son-in-law, William R. Gold; a son, Jonathan Demarest; a granddaughter, Rachel D. Gold and two grandsons, Alexander D. Gold and Joshua D. Gold; and seven great-grandchildren, Caelan, Ronen, Aidan, Arianna and Logan Gold, Hunter Antonio Longo and Aleena Afzal-Gold. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Anthony, Vincent and Lewis Fadale. The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9th in the Chapel of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Virginia Carr, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Westfield, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home.
