Obituary of Randy W. McCray

Randy W. McCray, 57, of Durham, NC, formerly of Jamestown, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday February 5, 2013 in his home. He was born May 6, 1955 in Jamestown the son of Donald H. and Phyliss S. Ehrhart McCray. Randy was a 1973 graduate of Southwestern Central High School and attended Edinboro University where he participated in marching band and sang with Up With People. He worked as a 911 Dispatcher for the City of Jamestown while attending JCC. He received his nursing degree from Jamestown Community College and moved to Kentucky where he worked as a charge nurse at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital. Returning to Jamestown, he worked as a Registered Nurse at WCA Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department. He was instrumental in establishing the Alstar and Starflight programs, serving as Operations Manager. He was also coordinator of the Lifeline program and served on the New York State EMS Council for ten years. Randy was a dedicated volunteer fireman, serving with the Celoron Fire Department as a New York State Certified EMT and as President. After moving to Durham, he continued to be active with the Parkwood Fire Department. For 20 years, he worked at Durham Regional Hospital as a Registered Nurse and recently as a Resource Nurse with Labcorp of United Healthcare. He was a Ham Amateur Radio Operator and member of the Durham County Weather Spotters. Surviving besides his father of Lakewood are, his wife, Wanda Schrader McCray whom he married September 4, 1976; a brother, Rex (Micki) McCray of Jamestown; three sisters, Rynda McCray and Rissy (Michael) Viglione, both of Erie, PA; Robyn McCray of Elizabeth, CO; a niece, Shannon (Bryan) Olson of Jamestown; and nephew, Michael (Ryan) McCray of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his mother on February 26, 2007. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. Peter Dawson, Fire Service Chaplain will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Volunteer Fire Department of your choice.
