Obituary of Carl E. Hagberg

Carl E. Hagberg, age 93, of Myrtle Street, Jamestown, NY passed away on February 8, 2013 surrounded by family. He was born on November 21, 1919 in Mars, Pennsylvania, the youngest child of Gust Hagberg and Marie Swanson Hagberg. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his older brother Eric (WWII), his sister Annaleda, his brother Nelson, and his wife of 56 years, Doris Limberg Hagberg who passed away on November 17, 2000. Carl was a 1936 graduate of Falconer High School and graduated from Alfred University Class of 1947 where he lettered in wrestling and was a member of Kappa Psi Upsilon Fraternity. He was a veteran of WWII having served overseas as a Lieutenant in the Persian Gulf Command in Iran. He continued his military service in the Army Reserves and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel Corps of Engineers. After graduation, Carl worked in the ceramics industry as an engineer for American Standard in Kokomo, IN; Colonial Insulator in Akron, OH; and KT Clay Company in both Alliance OH and Lawrenceville, NJ. In 1985 Carl and Doris retired to Breckinridge, CO where they enjoyed the mountain lifestyle and were voted Summit County Colorado Senior Volunteers of the Year. Carl loved to ski and competed annually in the Senior Winter Games where he won many medals for downhill and slalom skiing. He and Doris loved to travel and made many trips to England, Sweden, and all over the United States. They returned to the Jamestown area in 1998. Carl was an active member of First Covenant Church preparing meals for Wednesday Night Fellowship and enjoying the monthly Men's Breakfast. He always enjoyed the annual Hagberg Family Reunions, having attended last summer's 55th Reunion. Carl loved to cook, was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking, gardening and camping. He had memberships with the Elks, Vikings, American Legion, and Reserve Officers Association. Carl loved the Lord, his family and his country. He made the world a better place and he will be missed. He is survived by his children: Tracy (William) Murphy of Longmont, CO; Jon Mathews (Lane) Hagberg of Jamestown, NY; Carla (Robert) Sakson of Trenton, NJ; foster sons: Stuart (Valerie) Alexander of Liberty, NY and Carl (Melinda) Alexander of Ft. Collins, CO; foreign exchange daughter: Joyce Versteegh (Allen) Limberg of Port Charlotte, FL; grandchildren: Kerstin (Chris) Vinall of Louisville, CO; Erika (Eric) Stormer of Frewsburg, NY; Julie (Gavin) Paterniti of Jamestown, NY; Benjamin (Tricia) Alexander of Somerset, NY; Sarah (Johnny) Munoz of Neversink, NY; great grandsons: Landon and Tristan Stormer of Frewsburg, NY; and the second love of his life, Renate Bob of Jamestown, NY. A funeral celebrating Carl's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First Covenant Church. Rev. Adam Rohler will officiate. Burial will be in Allen Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home.
