Obituary of William J. O'Brien

William J. O'Brien, 74, of 82 Metcalf Avenue, died Friday February 22, 2013, in WCA Hospital. He was born February 4, 1939, in Troy, NY, a son of the late Marjorie Baird O'Brien and William J. O'Brien who was a Congressional Metal of Honor recipient. Bill was a 1956 graduate of Lansingburg High School in Troy and was a veteran of the US Air Force serving from 1956-61. Following his military service he was employed by Leonard Hospital, Troy and St. Claire's Hospital, Schenectady, as a lab technician. In later years he worked as a salesman for several laboratory equipment companies. Prior to his retirement in 2008, he had been employed for 15 years by Wal-Mart in Lakewood since their grand opening. He was a member of Celoron Fish Club, Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion and Jamestown Audubon. Bill was an avid reader who loved to play golf, fish, work on the computer and spend time in the Adirondacks. He was a proud Irishman who was known for growing a beard for St. Patrick's Day and dying it green. Surviving are his wife the former Linda Saehrig, whom he married June 5, 1965; 2 sons David (Stacy) O'Brien of Little Rock, AK and Casey (Gabrielle) O'Brien of Denver, CO and three grandchildren Sean, Skyler and Becket O'Brien. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Luke's Episcopal Church Chapel. Rev. Liz Simmons will officiate.
