Obituary of Marshall L. Carlson

Marshall L. Carlson, 86, of 2205 Swanson Road in Jamestown, died at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing. He was born in Jamestown on January 3, 1927, a son of the late Paul R. and Martha Swanson Carlson. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1944 and attended Jamestown Community College. Marshall served in the US Navy during both World War II and again during the Korean War. A well-known area electrician and electrical contractor, Marshall had been owner of the former B & E Electric. He was a member of the IBEW Local 106 and the National Electrical Contractors Association. Active in Masonic circles for many years, he was a 35 year member of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 145 F. & A.M., the Valley of Jamestown Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite where he was a past Most Wise Master of the Jamestown Chapter of Rose Croix, and had served as chairman of the lighting committee for many years. In 1990 he was awarded the Scottish Rite Meritorious Service Award by the New York State Council of Deliberation. Additionally he was a member of Western Sun Chapter No. 67 Royal Arch Masons, Ismailia Shrine, Jamestown Shrine Club where he had served as president, Royal Order of Jesters and Kharram Grotto. Previously he had been a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebonon. Marshall's other past memberships include the Chamber of Commerce where he was a past president, Downtown Merchants Assoc., Jamestown Area Personnel Assoc., Rotary Club, Thule Lodge #127 and Viking Lodge #65. He also sang in the Viking Male Chorus for almost 50 years. As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Marshall served on the Council and as an usher, sang in the choir, and had been active in Senior Men. Survivors include his wife, Alice Wahlstrom Carlson, with whom he would have celebrated their 65th anniversary this coming April 3rd; a son, Robert (Robin) Carlson of Ft. Worth, TX; two daughters, Nancy Hynes of Anchorage, AK and Susan (Jim) Bailey of Maple Springs, NY; seven grandchildren: Todd (Jill) Carlson of Indianapolis, IN, Scott Carlson of Denver, CO, Erik (Miranda) Barnes of Queenstown, New Zealand, Bethany (Josh) Zellmer of Anchorage, AK, Katie Meyers of Los Angeles, CA, Jessica Hynes of St. Louis, MO, and Kaleigh Dwyer of Maple Springs, NY; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, C. Robert Carlson of Grand Rapids, MI. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Doretta Young; a brother, Paul R. Carlson, Jr.; and a son-in-law, William Hynes. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Masonic Lodge Funeral Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 556 E.
