Obituary of Ronald H. Putnam

Ronald H. Putnam, 93, of 75 Sturges Street, passed peacefully Friday afternoon April 12, 2013, in the home of his stepson David Juhl. A lifelong resident of Jamestown, he was born February 18, 1920, the son of the late George Horace Putnam and Hazel Victoria Swanson Putnam. Ron was a 1939 graduate of Jamestown High School. He was a WWII veteran, serving from January 1942 through October 1945 in the US Army. Most of his duty was with the 2nd Armored Division in North Africa and Europe. Ron was one of 29 veterans in Rolland E. Kidder's book "A Hometown Went to War." For 34 years he was employed as an advertising sales representative for the Jamestown Post Journal, retiring in 1984. He was a life member of John W. Tiffany Post #53 Veterans of Foreign Wars; member of Robert P. Illig Chapter #47 Disabled American Veterans, Henry Mosher Post #638 American Legion, Thule Lodge #127, 2nd Armor Division Association, Jamestown High School Hundred Member Club and longtime member of the national Rifle Association and AARP. He will be remembered fondly by his morning walk friends at Chautauqua Mall, his Sunday coffee buddies at Foote Avenue McDonald's and lovingly by his family. Survivors include step son David R. (Paula Knapp) Juhl of Jamestown, two grandchildren Adam (Carrie) Putnam of Fredericksburg, VA and Leann Putnam of New Hyde Park, NY; two great grandchildren Alivia Grace Putnam and Kaitlyn Fernandez, both of Fredericksburg, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Beverly Ann Johnson Putnam; his son Mark Steven Putnam and a granddaughter Vicky Lynn Juhl. The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Myron M. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received prior to the service from 6-8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
