Obituary of Peter J. Byrne

Peter J. Byrne, 57, of 265 Cole Ave. died May 13, 2013 in his home with his family following a long struggle with cancer. A Jamestown resident since 1979, he was born June 5, 1955, the son of Paul and Clair Byrne. Pete was a 1974 graduate of Mechanicville High School and a 1978 graduate of Buffalo State, where he earned a bachelor's degree in industrial technology. As a scout leader and church youth leader, he loved to spend time with, and teach, his sons. A woodworker hobbyist, Pete derived great satisfaction in creating beautiful items for family and friends. He said the key to any successful project was to be patient and pay attention to details, which could also serve as a metaphor for his life. Pete was employed as a systems analyst for Plantrol Systems Ltd. of Westfield for 30 years. Before that, he had similar responsibilities at AMSCO in Jamestown. A husband, father and grandfather, Pete was a member of First Covenant Church, a volunteer in its food pantry and also at the Gateway Center. In addition, he performed a number of projects at the First Covenant Church Preschool and was a regular member of his church's Tuesday morning prayer group. Pete is survived by his wife of nearly 35 years, Cathy A. Byrne, whom he married May 27, 1978. Also surviving are his mother; sons Stephen (Malinda), Tim (Jenn), and Andrew (Ashley); two grandchildren Maggie and Eli; sister Carolyn (Winsor Lott), brothers Kevin (Mona) and Larry; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Covenant Church. Revs. Adam and Amy Rohler will officiate. Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral home.
