Obituary of Roger L. Bender

Roger L. Bender, 76, of 32 West Fairmount Ave. Lakewood, NY passed away unexpectedly at 8:25 a.m. Thursday (August 1, 2013) in his home. He was born July 27, 1937 in Cleveland, OH a son of the late George and Lois Timmerman Bender. He was 1956 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corp serving from December 1, 1956 to November 30, 1959. Before his retirement he had owned and operated Bender Realty for over 25 years. During his professional career he served as President of the Greater Jamestown Board of Realtors and was Vice President during the construction of the Board of Realtors office building on West Sixth St. in 1988. He attended the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and was a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club the Celoron Moose Lodge and was a former member of the Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 American Legion. Roger loved to spend time on Chautauqua Lake boating and muskie fishing with his family and friends. He also enjoyed his many fishing trips to Canada, his trip to Cave Run Lake in Kentucky and Lake St. Clair in Michigan. He also loved to tell stories of his time spent in the Marine Corp and of his years playing football for Jamestown High School. Surviving are his wife the former Carol L. Ecklund whom he married September 23, 1977, a son Christopher L. Bender of San Diego, CA, two step-children Michael (Michele) Sperry, Kristin (Mike) Yuchnitz both of Ashville, NY, two grandchildren Skylar Gordon and Don Glasco both of AZ, five step-grandchildren Jack and Emilee Sperry, Michael, Patrick and, Karianne Yuchnitz all of Ashville. Besides his parents she was preceded in death by a daughter Yvette Bender and a sister Joanne Martin Weilacher. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy Hoyer, pastor of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 5-7 p.m. Monday and for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday in the funeral home.
