Obituary of Joyce E. Green

Joyce Elaine Cox Green, 89, died Thursday October 10, 2013 in WCA Hospital. A Lakewood resident for more than 40 years, she was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on November 18, 1923, the daughter of Ernest Harold Cox of Vancouver and Gladys Hawksley of Dawson City, Yukon Territory and Vancouver. Raised in Vancouver and Seattle, where her father owned Cox & Sullivan Florists, she attended Mills College in San Francisco from 1940 to 1942. In 1945, she met (on a blind date in Vancouver) and on December 8 married Lt. William Joseph Lawrence Green, USN, a naval aviator then stationed at Whidbey Island, WA. After the war, Mr. Green became an advertising executive. Mr. and Mrs. Green lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, DC and Wilton, CT before coming to Lakewood in 1971, when Mr. Green became part of the group that acquired Falconer-based Chautauqua Hardware Corporation and its subsidiary, Period Brass, which Mr. Green headed until his death in 1987. An active tennis player into her 80s and a lifelong bridge player, Mrs. Green attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church and was a member of the 210 and Livingston Clubs and a longtime member of the board of WCA Hospital. At the time of her death, Mrs. Green was a resident of Emeritus of Lakewood. She is survived by her daughter, Courtney Elaine Green Talty (Sean) of Cincinnati and three sons, Kevin William Cox Green (Kathy) and Douglas Lawrence Green, both of Washington, DC, and Brian Patrick Green (Karen) of Gardner, Maine, and by nine grandchildren. A grandson, Spec. Douglas Jay Green, USA, was killed in combat in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in August 2011. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in St. Luke's Episcopal Church Chapel. The Rev. Liz Simmons, Rector, will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the undercroft at the church.
