Obituary of Shirley L. Raymond

Shirley Louise Peterson Raymond, 89, of Jamestown, NY passed away Saturday, October 12, 2013, in W.C.A. Hospital. A lifelong area resident, she was born December 20, 1923 in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of the late Sven Emil and Ethel Louise Carlson Peterson. She was a 1941 graduate of Jamestown High School, a 1937 confirmed member of the First Lutheran Church and a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church for over 40 years. Before her retirement in 1990, she was employed by the C. Kenneth Johnson Insurance Agency where she worked for 35 years. She was also employed by the former Hanson Tool Company for 27 years retiring as Vice President. Shirley was very active in civic organizations with memberships including; life member of the Chautauqua Women's Club, life member of the Chautauqua Bird, Tree and Garden Club, life member and graduate of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle Ross MacKenzie Class of 1999, in celebrating Chautauqua's 125th Anniversary and 2001 graduate of the Guild of the Seven Seals. She was also a member of the Norden Women's Club, the American Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, the Ingjald Lodge # 65, Independent Order of the Vikings, the Richardson Boat Owners Association, the Classic Yacht Club of America, the Jamestown High School One Hundred Member Club, the Arts Council of Chautauqua County, the Lucille Ball Little Theater of Jamestown, the Fenton History Center Museum and Library, the Jamestown Audubon Society, the Elizabeth Warner Marvin Community House, the American Association of Retired Persons, the YWCA, the National Lymphedema Network in San Francisco, CA, a life member of the Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority since 1945 and from where she was given the Golden Circle Award at the 1996 Founder's Day Dinner at the Athenaeum Hotel, Chautauqua Institution. She was a former member of the Jamestown Chapter of Professional Secretaries International and was named Secretary of the Year in 1983, when honored by the Chapter at the 11th Annual Boss Night Dinner. Shirley had many happy memories with her family at the Peterson/Carlson summer cottage on Chautauqua Lake. She took a lifelong pleasure in domestic and foreign travel and devoted the past several years to researching, recording and sharing the ancestral histories of the Carlson/Peterson families. Surviving are a daughter Susan Louise (James) Jones of Jamestown, a son Bruce Frederick (Ginger) Raymond of Maple Springs, her four grandchildren; Holly Louise Jones (Jonathan) Weston of Panama, NY, Erik Bruce (Crystal) Raymond of Denver, CO, Heather Ann Raymond (Jeffrey) Budzich of Syracuse, NY, Ashley Lynn Dominick of Jamestown and three great grandchildren; Nora Ann Budzich, Carmela Susan Budzich, Simon Bruce Dominick. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Frederick Jerome Raymond whom she married September 15, 1943 and who died October 6, 1982 and a brother Warren Alfred Peterson who died March 21, 2010. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will not be observed. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Shirley's name to a charity of one's choice.
