Obituary of Marshall E. Mattison

Marshall E. Mattison, 77, of 113 Lakeview Ave. Lakewood, NY and Ruskin, FL, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, in his home. An area resident for most of his life, he was born October 10, 1936 in Olean, NY, a son of the late Charles and Margaret Andersson Mattison. He was a graduate of Southwestern Central High School and before his retirement in 1999 was employed as a tool and die maker for Inscape, Inc. He had earlier worked for the Rollform of Jamestown, Inc. for several years. He was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Lakewood and was very active with the Ingjald Lodge # 65, Independent Order of the Vikings, serving as Chief in 1985. He also served on the grand council for the National Independent Order of the Vikings. He was a past president of the Lakewood Chemical Fire Department, a Boy Scout leader where he was coined the nickname "Swampy", and a member of the former Lakewood Jaycee's. He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather who loved hunting, fishing, cooking and playing golf. He also enjoyed baking bread and won first prize for his rye bread in the Post Journal baking contest. Surviving are his wife Mary Hornsten Mattison whom he married June 7, 1958, two sons; Gregory (Kathy) Mattison of Lakewood, Michael (Kathleen) Mattison of Gaithersburg, MD, a daughter Cynthia (Michael) Burns of Tavernier, FL, five grandchildren; Andrew Mattison, Christopher Mattison both of Lakewood, Kirsten Burns of Orlando, FL, Conor Mattison and Victoria Mattison both of Gaithersburg, MD, and a brother James (Karen) Mattison of Jamestown. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Charles J. "Jerry" Mattison, a grandson Patrick Burns and a nephew David Mattison. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy Hoyer, pastor of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Lakewood will officiate. Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home where an Ingjald Lodge # 65, Independent Order of the Vikings Lodge memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 35 West Fairmount Ave. Lakewood, NY 14750, Hospice Chautauqua County, 20 West Fairmount Ave. Lakewood, NY 14750 or to a charity of one's choice.
