Obituary of Laura A. Johnson

Laura A. Johnson, 82, of 14 Dewey Place, Jamestown, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013, in the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. An area resident since 1958, she was born September 7, 1931 in Byrnedale, PA, a daughter of the late Clarence R. and Amy L. Postlethwaite Anderson. Laura was a 1949 graduate of the Weedville, PA High School and following graduation attended the Dubois, PA Business College and the Dubois Aviation School. While living in Jamestown she graduated from the Jamestown Community College School of Nursing. In earlier years she had worked as a flight dispatcher for the former Allegheny Airlines out of Alexandria, VA. Following nursing school she was a registered nurse for W.C.A. Hospital, the former Fenton Park Nursing Home and the Lutheran Social Services. Working as a geriatric nurse, she retired doing private duty nursing and was one of the original hospices nurses in Chautauqua County. She was an active member of the First Covenant Church where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Covenant Women Ministries. She also sang in the Living Christmas Tree and took several mission trips with Covenant Women. She loved teaching the little children about Jesus and was known for her big hugs. She was a volunteer for the March of Dimes for several years. She always cherished the memories of the church choir trip to Sweden. Laura loved spending time with her family where she will be remembered for her cooking and baking. She loved doing crossword puzzles, antiquing, sewing and going to garage and yard sales. Surviving are three sons, Alvan H. Johnson, Paul R. Johnson, Daniel B. Johnson all of Jamestown, three granddaughters, Rachel E. Johnson (Rick Lander) of Jamestown, Heidi Marie Johnson of Warren, PA, Susan Tatiana Johnson of Russia, two great granddaughters, Madison Claire Hicks, Callie Ava Grace Reyda both of Jamestown, a sister, Verlie Freeburg of Kersey, PA, and a brother David W. Anderson of Painted Post, NY. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Harold Alvan Johnson whom she married April 12, 1952 and who died August 7, 2010 and a brother John A. Anderson. The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the First Covenant Church. Mr. David B. Larson, retired director of visitation will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Covenant Church, 520 Spring St. Jamestown, NY 14701.
