Obituary of John S. Madden

John S. Madden, 87, of 87 Willow Avenue, died Saturday January 11, 2014, in WCA Hospital. A native of Jamestown, he was born September 15, 1926, the son of the late John and Margaret White Madden. He attended Jamestown High School. He was a WWII veteran of the US Navy serving aboard the USS Lake Champlain from 1944-46. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he was employed by Cummins Jamestown Engine Plant and earlier had worked for Automatic Voting Machine Corporation for 31 years. He was a communicant of Holy Apostles Parish Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Knight a Columbus and had received his 4th degree. He was also a member of Samuel Derby Post #556 American Legion. For several years he was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. Surviving are his wife the former Anne Devlin, whom he married October 6, 1956 and a brother-in-law Emmett (Norma) Devlin of Westfield. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Monica Penfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Rev. Dennis W. Mende will be celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 1:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701.
