Obituary of Walter S. Mead

Walter S. ("Scotty") Mead, 91, of 45 Robinson Avenue, West Ellicott, died Monday March 3, 2014, in WCA Hospital. He was born July 31, 1922, in Jamestown, the son of the late Leland and Clara Johnston Mead. He was a WWII veteran of the US Army Air Force, serving three years in England, France, Germany, and Belgium. He was a member of the 852nd Engineer Corps, constructing and repairing airfields. He retired in 1986 after a long career as a printer for the Post Journal. He then volunteered at the Resource Center and was a school bus monitor for Jamestown School District. He enjoyed playing golf with his son-in-laws, playing on the American Legion Golf League - 777 Herman Kent Post. He loved NASCAR racing, the New York Yankees, the Buffalo Bills, and his dog, Peanut. He attended Fluvanna Community Church. Surviving are his wife the former Joyce L. Johnson, whom he married June 5, 1948; four daughters Susan Leonard of Jamestown, Barbara Foulk of West Ellicott, Judy (Dale) Smith of Concord, NC and Christine (James) Reed of West Ellicott; fourteen grandchildren Rick (Julie) Valone, Paul Leonard, Sherry (Ken) Moore, James (Anne) Leonard, Debra (Brian) Miller, Carissa (Bill) Dorrian, Erika Foulk,Sara (Ryan) Bennett, Ryan Smith, Heather Smith, Joshua (Summer) Danforth, Tyler Danforth, Hillary Danforth and Anna Polowy; twelve great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Florence Brewster, Shirley Knapp and Grace Mead. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Timothy Stahlman will officiate. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. No graveside service will be observed.
