Obituary of Joan S. Hoaglund

Joan S. Hoaglund, 82 passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, in Riverside Village, Elkhart, IN. An Elkhart resident for the last 20 years, she was born in Jamestown NY on April 22, 1931, daughter of the late Elton and Louise Owens Sharp. She graduated Jamestown High School in 1949 and earned her associates degree from Jamestown Community College in 1977. Prior to her retirement she was employed by State Senator Jess Present as a secretary. She earlier had worked as secretary for Bishop Haines at The National Cathedral, Washington, DC, feature writer for The Post Journal and as one of the first team of 911 dispatchers for the City of Jamestown. Joan was active with the Lucille Ball Little Theatre, having one of her first of many roles in "I Remember Mama" at the age of 17. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jamestown and sang in the choir for many years. She was a hardworking, selfless mother who made countless sacrifices for the benefit of her children. The family wishes to thank the staff at Riverside Village for the incredible care provided to Joan. Surviving are five children Andrea (Hayden) Bryan of Arlington, VA, Barbara (Fred) Estrup of Bristol, IN, Beth (John) Bige of Renton, WA, and Laurie (Greg) Whitermore and Todd (Michelle) Hoaglund both of Jamestown; eight grandchildren Sarah (Jeff) Amerling of New Orleans, LA, Christian Estrup of Bristol, IN, Colin Whitermore of Charlotte, NC, Allison (Alex) Johnson of Lakewood, NY, Kyle and Rachel Bige of Renton, WA and Alexandria and Matthew Hoaglund of Jamestown, NY and a brother Fred (Sylvia) Sharp of Merritt Island, FL. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Kristen Allen will officiate. Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. prior to the service.
