Obituary of Rita I. Haines

Rita I. Haines, 94, formerly of 201 Frederick Blvd. West Ellicott, passed away Saturday May 10, 2014 in the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born February 23, 1920 in Salamanca, NY the daughter of the late George and Rose Sobkowiak Miskowiec. Prior to her retirement, Rita had been employed at the former Bigelow's, Wrights, and Brostroms Department Stores. She volunteered as a Grey Lady at WCA Hospital. Rita was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lakewood and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters. She actively participated in many church functions as well as laundering and pressing the church linens for over 40 years. She played on many golf and bowling leagues, loved gardening, flowers, baking, sewing, traveling, and was an avid dog lover. Rita was also a member of the Celoron-West Ellicott Senior Citizens, and Home Bureau. Surviving are two nephews, Dean Owens of Tonawanda, NY; Lawrence Owens of CA; and cousins, great nieces and great nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Martin "Marty" Haines who died September 24, 1987; and a sister, Bridget Owens. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. Piotr Zaczynski, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca, NY. Friends will be received from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (prior to the service) in the Lind Funeral Home.
