Obituary of Lucy J. Alpaugh

Lucy J. Alpaugh, 87, of the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center, died Sunday, June 8, 2014, in the facility. She was born December 5, 1926, in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Lennart and Mary Slocum Lindner. Following graduation from high school she was accepted by the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City for a two-year course of study. Her education and love of the theater led her to jobs on Broadway, Playhouse 90, US Steel Hour, Philco Playhouse, as well as Summer Stock at the Millstream Playhouse. Living in Jamestown from 1953-83, she had starring roles in more than 30 productions at Little Theater. From 1983 to 2006, she and her husband lived in Columbia, SC, where she resumed her professional acting career in commercials, print advertising, Town Theater, and several movies. An active community member, she was elected to the Jamestown City Council as one of the first two women to serve in that capacity. She served the City of Jamestown as Director of Development, and was later employed by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation as its first fundraiser. Lucy served on the Jamestown Community College Board of Trustees, including a term as chairperson. Along with other former chairpersons, she was the recipient of the John D. Hamilton Award. She was also a member of the Boards of Directors of Jamestown General Hospital, WCA Hospital, Little Theater of Jamestown, and Chautauqua County Council for the Arts. Her memberships included the Third Order of Saint Francis, PEO, Jamestown Little Theater, Screen Actors Guild, Actors Equity, Fortnightly and Zonta, for whom she served as president. Surviving are four sons: Andrew (Cynthia) Alpaugh and Mark (MaryAnn) Alpaugh, of Jamestown, Clifford (Kim) Alpaugh and John P. Alpaugh, of Columbia, SC; ten grandchildren: Geoffrey (Dorsey) DeLong, Rebecca (Andrew) Fields, David (Krista) DeLong, Eric DeLong, Joshua (Carrie) Alpaugh, Jeremiah (Melissa) Alpaugh, Marissa (Michael) Hamilton, Martha Alpaugh, Jennifer (Daniel) Gillespie and Mitchell (Jillian) Alpaugh; twenty-one great-grandchildren and a sister Martha Lindner of Jamestown. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John "Jack" Alpaugh, whom she married October 23, 1948, who died December 7, 2010; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth DeLong, in 1994; five brothers, Lennart, David, Paul, Philip, and Peter Lindner and a sister, Isabelle Lindner. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt will officiate. Inurnment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, SC.
