Obituary of Wesley V. Lutgen

Wesley V. Lutgen, 85, of 5340 Maple Springs-Ellery Rd., Bemus Point, died unexpectedly, along with his son, Ben, Saturday, December 27, 2014 as a result of injuries sustained in a car/pedestrian accident that occurred Saturday evening in Maple Springs. He was born January 17, 1929 in Jamestown, a son of the late Charles E and Georgia Liddicoat Lutgen, and was a graduate of Bemus Point High School. A veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, he served from 1950 to 1954 with duty in Germany. Wesley was employed as an equipment operator by the Town of Ellery Highway Department for 26 years, retiring in 1986. He had earlier worked for Chautauqua Brick. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Wes enjoyed music and had been a member of the Lonestar Rangers, as well as the Twilight Rangers. His family will always remember that he worked like an ox most of his life. He is survived by four daughters: Wendy Chapman of Bemus Point, Lisa McIver of South Carolina, Becky Hughes of Florida and Dora Lutgen of Jamestown; two sons: Tom Lutgen of Warren and Dan Lutgen of Jamestown; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great- great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Barber and Linda Anderson, both of Bemus Point. In addition to his son, Ben A. Lutgen who died Saturday, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Dave Lutgen. The family will greet friends and a memorial service will be held for the Lutgens Saturday, January 3, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Maple Springs Fire Hall. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
