Obituary of Geraldine Thompson

Geraldine Carter Thompson, 91, of Delray Beach, FL, formerly of Jamestown, passed away Wednesday December 24, 2014 in the Delray Medical Center. She was born December 23, 1923 in Dunkirk, NY the daughter of the late George T. and Hattie Dickey Carter. Geraldine was a 1941 graduate of Dunkirk High School and the Jamestown School of Practical Nursing. She was employed at the former Jamestown General Hospital for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Throughout the years, she had been very active on various community and civic committees and organizations. These included, in the early years: the Southwestern New York Heart Association, Family Services, inc., Chautauqua County Community Services Board and the Jamestown Board of Social Services. She was past Matron of Martha Chapter No. 38 Order of the Eastern Star. Additional activities and organizations include: Appointed to the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities from 1991 to 1996, serving as chair of the Personnel Committee; past president of the YWCA Board of Directors; recognized by the National YMCA in 1991 as a woman "making a difference in her community"; past president of RSVP; past Vice Chairperson, Local Selective Service Board #92; past vice president Inter-Club Council; one of the founding directors of the Jamestown Community Schools Council; recipient of the 1993 New York State Gov. Cuomo's Award for African American of Distinction in the Southern Tier; 1991 Jamestown's Woman of the Year; President of the Jamestown Chapter, The Links, Inc; member of the Board of Directors of the Chautauqua County Blind Association; and a member of the Ebony Task Force. Surviving are her husband, John Thompson Sr.; three sons, John "Jackie" Thompson Jr. and his wife Sandra of Erie, PA; Brian Thompson Sr. and his wife Betty of Round Rock, TX; Dennis Thompson and his wife Pat of Boynton Beach, FL; eight grandchildren, Troy Ogden of Meadville, PA; Derwood "D.G." Basham of German Town, PA; Monique "Nikkie" Jackson of Hamburg, NJ; Allen Basham, Sonja Thompson, both of Erie, PA; Brian Thompson Jr. of Jamestown; Martina Thompson, Kelere Thompson both, of Boynton Beach, FL; several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; three sisters, Betty Carter of Cleveland, OH; Elizabeth Davis of Columbus, OH; and Rosalie Karim of Erie, PA. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Allen; and a brother, Robert Carter. The funeral service will be held at 12 Noon Friday in the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 53 23rd Street Jamestown. The Rev. Leroy Walker, pastor, will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until Noon (two hours prior to the service) in the church. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
