Obituary of Ruby A. Harp

Ruby A. Harp, 89, of 183 Shadyside Ave. Lakewood, NY passed away at 12:58 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at her residence in Emeritus of Lakewood. An area resident for most of her life, she was born March 19, 1925 in Red Bank, PA a daughter of the late Walter J. and Dora Ethel Doverspike Ames. She will be remembered as a loving and caring housewife and homemaker and in later years was employed as a drapery specialist for the former Field and Wright Store and also worked in the drapery department at Sears Department Store. Ruby was a longtime active member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for over 50 years. She was a member of the Good News Singers, the Parable Singing Group, and the Lakewood Women's Club. She also enjoyed swimming in the ocean, playing bridge, gardening, reading, sewing, quilting and was a former member of the Red Hatters. She was also an avid golfer well into her 80's. She loved spending time with her family and was a caretaker for many children in her home for many years. Surviving are her four children, JoAnne Swanson of Stow, NY, Daniel W. (Lonnie) Harp of Millis, MA, Timothy J. (Teresa) Harp of Brussels, Belgium, Matthew L. (Rhonda) Harp of Busti, NY, 17 grandchildren, Mark D. (Zahra) Swanson of Midvale, UT, Lisa A. (Trulan) Preece of American Fork, UT, Luke C. (Joy) Swanson of Jamestown, NY, Benjamin A. (Mindy) Swanson of Houston, TX, Katherin E. (Michael) Long of Akron, NY, Matthew D. Harp of Millis, MA, Sarah C. (Derek) Franklin of N. Attleboro, MA, Jason A. (Sarah) Green of Charlotte, NC, David S. Green of Oakland, CA, Patrick C. Harp of Midway, MA, Jennifer L. (Jason) Edwards of Manassas, VA, Joshua "Roy" (Ashley) Harp of Sommerset, KY, Lydia (John Kinder) Harp of Syracuse, NY, Johannah K. (Scott) Brown of Baldwinsville, NY, Bryan (Ashton) Harp of Hyattsville, MD, Meagan Harp of Herndon, VA, Nicholas Harp of Manassas, VA, 29 great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Sharon VanOrd (William) Chamberlain of Selbyville, DE, a brother, William (Rose) Ames of Brookville, PA, two sister-in-laws, Geraldine Ames of St. Mary's, PA, Mary Ames of Mayport, PA, two half-brothers, Robert Ames, Lewis (Cathy) Ames both of FL. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Milton C. Harp whom she married August 21, 1945 and who died April 7, 1984, a son, Milton J. "Mike" Harp who died in 1966, a son-in-law, Mark T. Swanson who died in 2012, and three brothers, Howard, Walter and Charles Ames. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Lakewood United Methodist Church. The Rev. Nicholas Perry, pastor and Rev. Violet Davidson, retired pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home.
