Obituary of Sherwood A. Sampson

Sherwood A. Sampson, 85, of Lakewood passed away peacefully Thursday July 16, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born July 12, 1930 in Scandia, PA the son of the late Oscar and Mabel Swanson Sampson. As a teenager, he helped to run the family farm and hauled logs. He went on to serve his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Prior to retirement, Sherwood was a self employed carpenter and earlier worked for Clayton Anderson and the Carpenters Union. Sherwood was a lifetime active member of the Busti Church of God where he served in many capacities including on the building committee and as auctioneer for many church fundraisers. He enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, skiing, building model airplanes, and woodworking. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He lived his life for his family. Surviving are his wife, Jennie Lund Sampson whom he married December 27, 1952; three daughters, Nancy (Tom) Keefe of Lakewood; Debbie (Charlie) Pryde of White Plains, MD; Sandra (Tim) Desmond of Lakewood; seven grandchildren, Lisa Price (James) of Flemingburg, KY; Nick Pryde (Karina) of White Plains, MD; Amanda Fritzges (Kurt) of Frederick, MD; Shannon Lydon (Danny) of Hughesville, MD; Katie Desmond (Jason Kowalewski) of Washington, DC; Kane Desmond (Jennifer) of Lakewood, NY; Korri Zaharie (Brandon) of Jacksonville Beach, FL; and six great grandchildren, Aubree Lydon; Mallory and Camden Price; Ava and Claire Zaharie; and Myles Kowalewski. He was preceded in death by his father on January 12, 1989; his mother on May 15, 1989; three sisters, Beverly Juul on February 19, 1986; Shirley Stevens on September 5, 1991; and Barbara Keefe on September 25, 2013. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Busti Church of God. The Rev. Roy E. Ferguson, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chautauqua County 20 W Fairmount Ave Lakewood, NY 14750.
