Obituary of Robert E. Garvey

Robert E. Garvey, 86, of 6229 Red Pine Lane, Erie, PA, formerly of 84 South Main St. Ext. Jamestown, NY, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015, in the UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA. A lifelong area resident, he was born February 21, 1929 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Floyd H. and Agnes V. Cochener Garvey. He was a 1946 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from July 31, 1946 to January 9, 1948 during World War II. Before his retirement he was employed by the City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities as a Supervisor for many years. He was a member and former Chief of the Jamestown Police Reserves, the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion, the Fish Club and the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. He will be remembered as a loving and caring father and grandfather who was a great provider for his family. In the words of his daughter, "He was the best Dad in the whole wide world". Surviving are his daughter, Susan L. McChesney, with whom he made his home in Erie, PA, three grandchildren, John (Sarah Licata) McChesney, Katie (Chris Gallagher) McChesney, Kyle (Evan Cole) McChesney all of Erie, PA, three great grandchildren, Gracie, Connor and Claire Gallagher, a brother-in-law, Jeffrey L. Hunter of West Ellicott, two nieces, Karen Garvey of Jamestown, Carol Garvey of East Randolph, his caregiver and friend, Kevin Hovis and his best friend and companion, his dog Margot Finch. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret (Peg) Joan Anderson, his second wife, Jane Ellen Kocur Garvey, a brother, Donald Garvey and his sister-in-law Dorothy Garvey. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick Miller, pastor of the Zion Covenant Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and for one hour prior to the service on Thursday in the funeral home.
