He was a 1945 graduate of Jamestown High School and served in the US Navy during World War II (& postwar) on the crew of PGM -13, destroying enemy mines. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1951 and worked for many years as an insurance agent. On December 5, 1952 he married the love of his life, Sonya L. Swanson Johnson. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this Saturday. Don was a very devoted son, husband, father, & grandfather who loved God, his family & his country. He was a member of Zion Covenant Church, the VFW, NRA, Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, and the Viking Lodge. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature, hunting, botany, animals, and birds. One of his favorite places to be was out in the woods. In earlier years he enjoyed lifting weights, boxing, & drag racing. He never lost his passion for learning and was always reading about new subjects. Besides spending lots of time with his grandson, he liked to tinker & build things around the house, work on his cars, and meet his friends every morning for coffee (where they solved all the world's problems.) He will be deeply missed & most remembered for his great sense of humor, interesting stories, and the love he had for his family & friends.
