Barbara J. Smith, of Jamestown, passed away early Thursday morning, February 18th, 2021. Born December 15th, 1937, Barb lived in Erie, PA later graduating from Muskingum College in Ohio with a degree in Sociology. Barb is preceded in death by her loving parents Violet and John O'Brien, brother Edward O'Brien, and two sisters Dorothy and Marylin. In her early life, Barb was a majorette in her high school band, participating in the annual California Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena California. She also spent many summers at a family-owned cottage on the shores of Lake Erie. Barbara was known for her compassion for others. Driven by that compassion she spent time as a social worker in Erie, PA. After relocating to Jamestown in 1968 Barbara became an active member of the Chautauqua Institution community where her husband Steve played in the symphony. Her hobbies consisted of painting, drawing, and deciphering crossword puzzles. Barbara devoted herself to caring for others. Her strong faith in God served as a foundation for her family. A wife, mother, and grandmother, Barbara is remembered for her witty humor, immaculate storytelling, and kindheartedness. She is survived by loving husband, Stephen R. Smith; two sons: Gavin (Matess) Smith of Connecticut and Ryan (Jill) Smith of Jamestown. Barbara has 9 grandchildren: Gavin, Spencer, Madelyn, Hunter, and Alex Smith, and Ella, and Julia Smith.
