Obituary of James M. Hooven

James M. "Jim" Hooven, 69, of Jamestown, NY, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2022, in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY, following a courageous battle with leukemia. He was born March 3, 1953, in Corry, PA, a son of the late Norris S. Hooven and A. Louise "Dolly" Hooven. Jim was a 1971 graduate of Corry Area High School and earned his bachelor's degree in business from Grove City College, Grove City, PA in 1975. Before his retirement in 2019, he was the business manager for Spectrum Eyecare for 22 years. Prior to that, he worked for the former Clark Supply Company for 21 years. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church where he served as church organist for 38 years. As a lover of music and exceptional keyboardist, he belonged to several rock bands. He also sang with the Chautauqua Chamber Singers. He will be remembered as a loving and caring son, husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. His hobby was rescuing and caring for a variety of animals, including dogs, parrots, donkeys, and alpacas. He loved being outdoors doing yardwork. He also loved woodworking, listening to music, creating artwork including drawings and cartoons for his friends, and was an avid reader. He had a great sense of humor and was the type of person who made friends wherever he went. Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Sandra D. "Sandy" Hooven whom he married February 11, 1978, his mother, Dolly Hooven of Corry, PA, two children; Alicia (Jeremiah) Frantz of Lisbon, OH, Eric (Amber) Hooven of Jamestown, NY, seven grandchildren; Caleb, Logan, Karson, Korbyn, Kipten, Nova, and Mikala, a brother; Timothy Hooven of Erie, PA, as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Rob Allport-Cohoon, pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm Wednesday, two hours prior to the service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel Lutheran Church, 904 West Third St. Jamestown, NY 14701.
