Obituary of John W. Campion

John W. Campion, 92, of Jamestown, NY, passed away at 3:44 am Friday, February 17, 2023, in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing facility. An area resident since 1955, he was born May 23, 1930, in Brooklyn. NY, a son of the late John Martin and Marie Monahan Campion. John was a 1948 graduate of the Brooklyn Prep School and earned his bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure in 1951. He also completed graduate studies at Syracuse University and Fredonia State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from September 22, 1953, to August 22, 1955. Following his discharge from the Army, he settled in Jamestown, NY and began his teaching career at Falconer Central School where he was an English teacher from 1955 to 1972. Before his retirement in 1992, he was a labor relations consultant for the New York State United Teachers Association for 20 years. He was a longtime faithful communicant of Holy Apostles Parish at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church where he was a former member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and an altar server. He was also a member of the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion, Celoron, NY, the Celtics Club, and the Brooklyn Prep School Alumni Association. John was also involved with the local community serving on the Jamestown City Council from 1989 to 1991 and was also the recipient of the George Ritzer Labor Award in 1993 Surviving is his wife, Kathleen Joy Campion of Lakewood, NY, his eight children, John F. (Elaine) Campion of Jamestown, NY, Maura A. Campion of Jamestown, NY, Michael L. (Jim) Campion of San Diego, CA, Rev. Joseph Campion of Lafayette, LA, Kathleen A. (Terry) Stronz of Jamestown, NY, Christopher J. (Mary) Campion of Chattanooga, TN, Drs. James P. (Virginia) Campion of Westfield, NY, Paul A. (Randy) Campion of Louisville, KY, eighteen grandchildren, Jason, Jonathan, and James Campion, Kimesha Best Northway, Frances Best Bridges, Sarah Sherwood, Mike and Matt Campion, Rachel Deppas Anderson, Ryan and Greg Deppas, Joseph, Thomas, and Annie Campion, Tevin, Tyler, DeSean, and Mackenzie Johnson Campion. In addition, John had twenty great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Fran Patterson Campion whom he married October 22, 1955, and who died July 6, 2006, a grandson, David M. Campion and a sister, Mary Lou Moore. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Friday, February 24, 2023, in Holy Apostles Parish at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. His son, Rev. Joseph J. Campion, will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4-7 pm Thursday, February 23, 2023, in the Lind Funeral Home.
