Obituary of Joan L. Reed

Joan Marilyn Logie Reed, a resident of Venice, FL and Jamestown, NY, passed away in her home Thursday, March 14, 2024 with her husband of 70 years, Bill, by her side. She was 92. Joan was born February 8, 1932, a daughter of the late Robert and Agnes Logie of Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from Dormont High School in Pittsburgh where she was voted Best All Around and earned a Bachelor's degree from Grove City College. While at Grove City she met the love of her life, Bill Reed. Upon the completion of Bill's Army service in New Orleans, the couple settled in Jamestown, NY. As a young wife and mother, Joan joined several organizations that were the source of many lifelong friendships. She became President of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was recognized as AAUW's Outstanding Woman of the Year. Joan also became President of Creche, Inc., the WCA Services Corporation and President of Chautauqua Center for Visual Arts. Her love of the arts showed as she invited friends and artists to regular painting sessions in the basement of the family home. One of Joan's proudest roles was serving as President of the WCA Board of Directors. While raising two children, Joan took up the game of golf and to no one's surprise she excelled as evidenced by the many pieces of crystal and silver bearing inscriptions from both Moon Brook Country Club and The Venice Golf and Country Club. In addition to golf, Joan and Bill were avid tennis players, boaters, and enjoyed skiing at Holiday Valley. Joan was a member of the Valley Village Townhouse Association and sold real estate in Ellicottville, NY. Joan was also a popular substitute business teacher in many local area schools. Her business acumen served her well as she indulged in her favorite hobby, financial planning. Joan was also active in the Jamestown Garden Club, County Capers and the What's New Fair. She belonged to The Chautauqua Yacht Club, Moon Brook Country Club, Venice Golf and Country Club where she played a mean hand of bridge, The Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and The Vikings. Joan is survived by her husband of 70 years, J. William Reed, her daughter Jennifer Reed Stowell (Cal), and her son Todd William Reed (Kim). Joan leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Jason Reed (Stacy), Courtney Richards (Jon), Kylie Eagen (Daniel), Tucker Reed (Hannah), and Lily Stowell, as well as her eight great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Jean Bobo and sister Joy Troutman. Joan's family would like to thank everyone at Best Care Companions for all their love and care. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Joan's name to the Creche, Inc., P.O. Box 601, Jamestown, NY 14702.
