Obituary of James F. Scully Sr.

James F. Scully, Sr., 93, of the Edgewood Community in Jamestown, formerly of Locust St. in Lakewood, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the Star Hospice House with family by his side. He was the husband of Mary Lou Miller Scully, whom he married June 29, 1957. Jim was born Nov. 26, 1930 in Erie, PA, a son of the late Chief Lawrence P. and Anna Granahan Scully. He graduated from Erie's Cathedral Prep High School in 1950 and then attended Gannon University before serving in the US Navy from 1951 to 1954. Jim came to Jamestown in 1973 where he worked for Proto Tool as a purchasing manager. Upon their closing, he moved to Cummins Engine and worked for 15 years until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of St. James Church, where he was an usher and an altar server, and belonged to the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. Jim was a volunteer fireman for the Lakewood Fire Dept. and earlier the Kearsarge Volunteer Fire Dept. in Erie. Additionally, he was a State Fire Instructor in both New York and Pennsylvania. Surviving are five children: Louann DePietro of Titusville, FL, James (Kimberly) Scully, Jr. of Azusa, CA, Maureen (Daniel "Chip") DePietro of Englewood, FL, Michelle McNamara of Hernando Beach, FL, and Laureen Scully of Erie, PA; four grandchildren: Matthew (Alexis) DePietro and their daughter, Lucia Rose of Holiday, FL, NYS Trooper Nicholas DePietro of Macedon, NY, Brandon DePietro of Tampa, FL, and 1st Lt. Ryan DePietro stationed at Ft. Liberty, NC; and his brother, F. Patrick Scully of Erie, PA; as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Jim's late son-in-law, George (Michelle) McNamara's family: Michael (Bridget) McNamara and their children, Michael Lee and Brooke Kelly; Mary (Bryan) Bakash and their children, Callie Rae and Kai George; and Erin (Christopher) Williams and their son, Beaux Mac. Along with his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Jack Scully; two sisters, Sister Mary Julia Scully and Mary Margaret Scully; a grandson, Gregory DePietro; and two sons-in-law, George McNamara and Derek "Rick" DePietro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13th in St. James Catholic Church. Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lakewood Fire Dept. or to Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care's Star Hospice House.
